Les Walker was trained as an architect at the end of the modern period and the beginning of the post or anti-modern era. His work, therefore, can be very straightforward as in form follows function, the catch phrase for the modernist movement, or can be quite whimsical, as in Post-Modern times, depending on the client, the building’s program, the site constraints, and the budget. He has designed in practically every architectural style.
The Woodstock Playhouse: The Woodstock
Playhouse replaced and paid homage to a beloved historic structure. Designed in
parts (some historic, like the entry and sign, and some purely functional like
the seating, the roof, and the backstage areas) so that the building could be
built in stages. This design was particularly challenging because of its low
budget, its need to accommodate the discerning Woodstock theater crowd, and its
location at the entryway to the town of Woodstock.
