Les Walker has always enjoyed designing anything, whether it be a page in one of his books, a toy, a chair, or a building. Some of his most interesting architectural work has been designed with mass-production in mind. He might call it “assembly-line architecture”. His Supercube (a living machine) and his Playcube (a play machine) were featured in design magazines around the world, including Mobilia in Scandinavia, SD in Japan, and Abatare in Italy. His toys can be thought of as prefabricated, interchangeable, interlocking parts. His Frame Hung Dome designed for Popular Science Magazine, illustrates how he relates the design of a simple one-part construction toy to a larger, more complicated structure.
Playcube: The Playcube was designed for the American Plywood Association and House Beautiful Magazine as a 6' × 6' × 6' tall box which opens to accommodate all types of active children’s play. A fold-up table in the center for games and fold-out doors on all four sides facilitate different types of play activities.
